 Profile

In the XI at Eton and then after six appearances for Durham UCCE, James Bruce joined Hampshire in 2003 and spent successive winters in Australia with the Balmain Tigers in Sydney 2002-2003 and with South Perth Cricket Club from 2003 to 2005. After playing predominantly one-day matches, Bruce developed rapidly and was selected as Hampshire's new opening bowler for the County Championship, filling the void left by the recently retired Alan Mullally. Clearly enthused with his new responsibility, Bruce had an excellent 2006, taking a career best 5 for 43 against Championship champions Nottinghamshire at the Rose Bowl in June. He was awarded his county cap towards the end of the season. Another good summer followed in 2007 but shortly before the start of the 2008 campaign he announced he was retiring to pursue a career in the City.
