Australia's 212 is their lowest score in more than two years. The last time they were bowled out for a lower total was in October 2005, in the Super Test, when they were bowled out for 199 in their second innings. The last time they scored less than 212 in their first innings was in the first Ashes Test in 2005, when they were bundled out for 190 at Lord's.
The Australians also only lasted 50 overs, which is rather unusual for them, especially when playing at home. The last they failed to survive 50 overs in the first innings of a home Test was 13 years ago, in Sydney in January 1995, when England bowled them out in 42.5 overs. Since 1990, only three times have they been bundled out in 50 or fewer overs, while overseas it has happened six times during this period. (Click here for the full list.)
Perth is supposed to be a venue which suits Australia, but this is the second time in three Tests here that they have fallen behind in the first innings. In 2005-06, South Africa managed a 38-run lead in a match that was ultimately drawn. In 2000-01, New Zealand did even better, scoring 534 and then dismissing Australia for 351. In the last seven Tests here, Australia have conceded the first-innings lead three times.
Anil Kumble became just the third bowler to take 600 Test wickets, at the same venue where Kapil Dev reached the 400-wicket landmark 16 years ago. When he dismissed Shaun Tait, Kumble also broke the record for the most number of caught-and-bowled wickets - he now has 32 such wickets, one more than Muttiah Muralitharan. It was quite fitting that Rahul Dravid pouched the catch to give Kumble his 600th. Dravid has taken 54 catches off Kumble's bowling, which is the second-most prolific bowler-fielder combination (excluding wicketkeepers). The Muralitharan-Mahela Jayawardene combination leads the way with 65 dismissals. The two catches he took in the Australian first innings lifts Dravid's tally to 165; only two fielders - Stephen Fleming and Mark Waugh - have taken more Test catches. Dravid's 87 catches overseas is second only to Waugh's 92.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni took five catches in the innings, which is only the seventh time an Indian wicketkeeper has made five or more dismissals in an innings. Syed Kirmani and Nayan Mongia have achieved the feat twice.
The 102-run stand for the sixth wicket between Andrew Symonds and Adam Gilchrist was only the third time Australia put together a century stand after losing their fifth wicket for 61 or less. Their highest was 127, which Allan Border and Greg Matthews added after Australia were 5 for 58 against Sri Lanka in Moratuwa in 1992.
Mitchell Johnson's haul of 4 for 86 is his best in his five-Test career. It's the first time he has taken four wickets in an innings.
After scoring 2120 runs, Michael Hussey finally notched his first Test duck. Aravinda de Silva holds the record for most number of runs before his first zero (2779), while South Africa's AB de Villiers has made 2201 runs in 35 matches and hasn't yet been dismissed without scoring.
