Matthew Hoggard gave England's selectors a timely reminder of his worth with his first five-wicket haul of the season for Yorkshire, who dominated the second day against Hampshire at Headingley. Andrew Gale made 138, and there were valuable contributions from Gerard Brophy (40) and Ajmal Shahzad (35) as Yorkshire piled up 398. Enter Hoggard, who had Michael Brown caught for nought before bowling James Adams and John Crawley. Michael Carberry was struck a nasty below before he too fell, and Hoggard had all five Hampshire wickets when he trapped Michael Lumb in front for 11. Hampshire limped to stumps trailing by 283 runs.

Andrew Flintoff fell to Peter Trego for a golden duck as Somerset fought back strongly on the second day against Lancashire at Old Trafford. Paul Horton and Iain Sutcliffe added a further six to their overnight stand of 60, as Trego and Mark Turner chipped away. Horton was bowled by Trego for 64, and Flintoff nudged meekly at his first delivery to leave Lancashire tottering on 126 for 5. Trego was denied a hat-trick but Lancashire went to stumps trailing by 17 runs with just one wicket remaining.

Chris Jordan, Surrey's promising 19-year-old fast bowler, took 3 for 32 for Surrey, who dismissed Durham for 224 on the second day at Chester-le-Street. Of Durham's last six, only Phil Mustard (22) - who unfurled two glorious drives - and Paul Wiseman (21) reached double figures as Surrey took 7 for 80. Jordan bowled quickly and nastily, rapping Neil Killeen a vicious blow on the elbow, but Durham's bowlers responded in kind: Jonathan Batty was trapped plumb in front by Graham Onions, and Scott Newman fatally shouldered arms to the same bowler, before Mark Butcher dug the visitors out of a hole with 65. Surrey closed on 123 for 4, trailing by 101.

Second Division

Only 29 overs were possible at Derby with the home side moving to 64 for 1 in reply to Essex's 270. Ravi Bopara fell in the second over of the day, adding only one to his overnight 136, before Andre Nel removed Chris Rogers for 13. Steve Stubbings (23*) guided Derbyshire to stumps without further loss.

Rain allowed only 49 balls to be bowled at New Road, with Worcestershire adding 17 runs without further loss. They go into the third day against Leicestershire on 275 for 7.

Nicky Boje produced a superb all-round display for Northamptonshire, cracking 105 and picking up three economical wickets to leave Warwickshire stumbling on 129 for 7 at Northampton. Northamptonshire resumed on 252 for 6 with Boje on 58, and he found excellent support in Steven Crook (63), the pair putting on 111 for the seventh wicket. Boje reached his hundred from 182 balls with 12 fours, ratcheting Northamptonshire's innings up to an imposing 385. Warwickshire then capitulated, losing Ian Bell - who top scored with 41 - as Boje took 3 for 15 in 10 overs, leaving the visitors stumbling on 129 for 7, still trailing by 256 runs.
