UCBSA PRESS RELEASE (February 25 1999)

February 25 1999

UCBSA PRESS RELEASE

The Disciplinary Committee of the United Cricket Board of South Africa has found Brian McMillan guilty of contravening clause 1.1.5 of the Code of Behaviour in that he indulged in conduct detrimental to the game. The Disciplinary hearing was convened following a press report wherein it was alleged that McMillan used the terminology "coolie creeper" during the SuperSport series match, Western Province versus KwaZulu-Natal played in Cape Town on 12 February 1999.

The sentence imposed upon Mr. McMillan is that he be severely reprimanded. In mitigation of imposing a more severe sentence, McMillan will acknowledge that his words may have offended certain sections of the community, and accordingly, he will make a public apology at the conclusion of today's Supersport Series match being played in Cape Town.

Alan Badenhorst has been found guilty of contravening Clauses 1.1.4 and 1.1.5 of the Code of Behaviour in that he used crude and abusive language, and indulged in conduct detrimental to the game. The sentence imposed upon Badenhorst is that he suspended from participating in any cricket match played under the auspices of the United Cricket Board of South Africa, inclusive of Club Cricket, until January 1, 2001.

The judgement with respect to Badenhorst follows a report lodged with the Disciplinary Committee wherein he referred to player as a "half bred kaffir" during the UCB Bowl match, Eastern Province 'B' versus Griqualand West played in Port Elizabeth on 19 February 1999.

The United Cricket Board of South Africa views the use of derogatory racial remarks in whatever form in a very serious light, which will not be tolerated.

DR. A. BACHER MANAGING DIRECTOR, THE UNITED CRICKET BOARD OF SOUTH AFRICA
