Yorkshire born George Wheatcroft was a leading batsman for St George's who appeared in the first four USA v Canada matches, although in the first game he failed to show up on the second day until after the match was finished, thus missing USA's second innings. He was the only man on either side with first-class experience, playing in 1831 for Sheffield against Nottingham. In 1856 he umpired the USA v Canada match alongside Beverley Robinson who had appeared with him in the 1844 tie.
