 Profile

James Hildreth is an aggressive batsman with a good range of shots, who is building a reputation as one of the most promising young players in county cricket. A bit of an old-fashioned batsman, he plays off the back foot, is very relaxed at the crease and plays the cut and the pull shot. He is an ex-pupil of Millfield, where he was in the XI for four years. He represented England youth sides at all levels, including the Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2003-04. In just his second first-class match, in 2004, he hit 101 off 113 balls for Somerset against Durham, whose attack included Shoaib Akhtar. He scored 210 in his last Under-19 Test, against Bangladesh in August 2004, then in June 2005 he hit 38 from 24 balls as Somerset successfully chased an astonishing 343 against Australia. He is rated by Justin Langer as "an extraordinary talent". A talented allround sportsman, James played hockey for the West of England, tennis and squash for the South of England, rugby for Millfield and soccer for Luton Town as a teenager.
