James Middlebrook, an off-spinner and strong tail-end batsman, made his debut for Yorkshire in 1998 having represented the county at each stage from the Under-11 age group. His best bowling figures of 6 for 82, against Hampshire at Southampton in 2000, included four wickets in five balls. Moving south to Essex in 2002 (he was awarded his cap the following season), Middlebrook - whose nicknames include `Midhouse' and `Dog' - has taken well to Twenty20 cricket. In 2005 he was their most economical bowler in the competition, while adding useful lower-order runs. Will Luke, July 2006
