Derbyshire v New Zealanders, Tour match, Derby

Hassan Adnan defies the New Zealanders

Wisden Cricinfo staff

June 16, 2004

Derbyshire 259 for 6 (Adnan 113*, Sutton 41) beat New Zealanders 258 for 7 (Fleming 102, Styris 56, McMillan 43) by four wickets
Scorecard

The New Zealanders' disappointing tour of England continued today as they kicked off their limited-overs section with a four-wicket loss to Derbyshire. After Stephen Fleming scored a hundred in his side's total of 259 for 6, an unbeaten century from Hassan Adnan guided Derbyshire home with eight balls to spare.

Fleming, originally a doubt for the NatWest Series with a hip injury, continued his good form with 102 from 123 balls, including 13 fours. He provided the backbone of the innings, adding 117 with Scott Styris, who made a quick 56, and 48 with Craig McMillan.

Nathan Astle and Hamish Marshall both fell cheaply at the top of the order before Fleming and Styris steadied the ship. But Flemings's innings came to an end when he was trapped leg-before by the South African Ant Botha (201 for 4). At that stage, New Zealand were well set, but the late wickets of McMillan for 43, Jacob Oram for 3 and Brendon McCullum for 17 hindered their late surge.

Ian Butler, in the squad in place of the injured Shane Bond, quickly removed Nicholas Walker and Chris Bassano, but up stepped Adnan, the Pakistani batsman, who ticked Derbyshire along to victory with a run-a-ball 113 not out. He smashed 10 fours and a six, and put on exactly 100 with Luke Sutton, who scored 41.

Derbyshire had a few late scares when Graeme Welch and Mo Sheikh were out cheaply, but Botha kept his cool as he and Adnan guided their side to victory.
