County Championship

Northants wrap up convincing victory

Cricinfo staff

August 13, 2005

Division One

Points Table

A tenth wicket partnership of 65 between Min Patel and the Denmark international, Amjad Khan, helped Kent during a rain-affected day at Southampton against Hampshire. Starting the day on 366 for 8, Patel batted aggressively to score his third half-century of the season, taking Kent to 446 all out. Only 34 overs were possible and, in reply, Hampshire lost the opening batsman Michael Brown for 19 to leave them on 81 for 1 as rain stopped play.

Only eight overs were possible at Nottingham, as Middlesex and Nottinghamshire's game ended in a draw. Alan Richardson, in bowling Darren Bicknell, took his 47th wicket of the season, in what was Middlesex's only success in the short period of play.

Division Two

Points Table

Somerset's match against Yorkshire also fell victim to inclement weather, the game ending in a draw. Only 6.5 overs were possible, with Somerset adding nine runs to their overnight score of 173 for 4.

Northants needed just two balls to complete a brilliant victory over Derbyshire, to win by the convincing margin of 182 runs. Bowled out for 140 in their first innings, the lowest score of the match, their second innings repost of 466 for 6 demonstrated great character. It was all the more disappointing for Derbyshire, who have yet to register a win this season in the championship. Damien Wright took the final wicket to fall, that of Ian Hunter, with the second ball of the day.

Durham lost two further wickets on day two of their rain-affected match against Leicestershire, in which only 34 overs were possible. Paul Collingwood and Gordon Muchall were both dismissed by Adam Masters, who ended the day with figures of 2 for 40. Mike Hussey remains unbeaten on 70, with Durham reaching 149 for 3.
