Former New Zealand 'keeper joins Chennai Superstars

Parore signs two-year deal with ICL

Adam Parore, the former New Zealand wicketkeeper, has joined the ICL after signing a two-year contract with the Chennai Superstars, the winners of the unofficial league's inaugural competition.

Parore, 37, who retired from international cricket in March 2002, told the TV3 television network that he had signed for a "significant" amount, adding, "the money is good obviously and it was too good to turn down. Along with a few other factors it's a really good opportunity."

I've been thinking about it [coming out of retirement] for the last two to three years, but I've been waiting for the right opportunity. Obviously, in my circumstances I can't commit 12 months in a year as I used to," said Parore, who will take Chris Read's place in the Chennai-based team.

Parore has kept himself away from the game since he retired to take care of his mortgage broker business, but he represented the New Zealand Cricket Players' Association XI in a benefit game against the New Zealand Under-19s in December last year, taking a couple of catches.

"The first serious game I played was against the U-19s in Hamilton a couple of months ago, and it was at that stage that I thought that I can play at the same level, so after that I got a little bit more serious about it."

When asked about his motivation for joining the ICL, Parore said:"I just want to play again. I've had quite a few different experiences in the last few years since I retired. The competitiveness of the sport is hard to replicate in everyday life."

To be honest I miss it. I am looking forward to getting back in the saddle", Parore said. "In the back of my mind was the thought that I could always have another go at it".

Meanwhile, Parore was confident about his prospects. "My reputation speaks for itself, I am a professional sort of guy and I've got a good record with my fitness. I turn up for a game and I'm ready to play."

Parore joins the likes of Chris Cairns, Chris Harris, Hamish Marshall, Nathan Astle, Craig McMillan, Daryl Tuffey, Shane Bond and Andre Adams, to become the ninth New Zealander to sign with the unofficial XI. "I looking forward to seeing the guys again. It's going to be a bit like a Black Caps reunion."
