Profile
Big things were expected of Xavier Doherty, a left-arm orthodox spinner, after he starred at the Under-19 World Cup and was given a Tasmanian debut at 19 in 2001-02. Since then he has struggled for lasting impact in the Pura Cup but has been valuable in the shorter format and he was named Tasmania's one-day player of the year last summer. Only Ben Hilfenhaus took more limited-overs wickets for the Tigers in 2006-07, when Doherty claimed 11 at 29.72. He also chipped in with 136 runs including a season-opening 53 against Queensland. His two Pura Cup outings only brought three breakthroughs at 53 and the arrival of Jason Krejza will make it even harder for Doherty to cement a first-class position. He won a place at the Academy as part of the 2001 intake and played for the Prime Minister's XI in 2004, but must reduce his first-class average a long way below its current mark of 56.23 to achieve more representative honours.
