C&G Trophy round-up Warne collects one-day best June 4, 2006
South Conference Shane Warne turned Hampshire's C & G Trophy match against Surrey into a one-sided affair with six wickets in 20 balls as they went on to win by eight wickets. Warne's one-day career-best 6 for 42 bundled out Surrey for 166, but he also showed his caring side when team-mate Ali Brown's son was hit by a Jon Batty boundary. Warne yelled out to Paddy Farhart, the Hampshire physio, who raced over to treat the boy, who was fine. Things went Hampshire's way from the start at Whitgift School, when Scott Newman fell second ball. In the end Hampshire needed only 26 overs to chase down a meagre target of 167, which they did for the loss of just two wickets, both claimed by Nayan Doshi. One C White may have struck an unbeaten century and still ended up on the losing side, but down in the south it was a different story for another. Cameron White lifted Somerset to a three-wicket win against Glamorgan. Mark Cosgrove hit a fifty for Glamorgan as they made 203, which they were shaping up well to defend after they reduced Somerset to 26 for 3. But if they thought the task was done they reckoned without the efforts of White, who washed over them. None of the home fans at Tunbridge Wells were disgusted by Kent's admirable effort in overcoming Sussex by six wickets with three overs to spare. Richard Montgomerie pushed Sussex's total to a sizeable 284 for 9, but Martin van Jaarsveld (75 not out) and Rob Key (63) lit the fuse for Kent with a fourth-wicket stand of 130 before the bighitting Justin Kemp provided the fireworks - smacking 56 from 20 balls. Jamie Dalrymple and Scott Styris combined well with both bat and ball to help Middlesex conquer Essex at Lord's. Each took two wickets - as did Chad Keegan - and then shared an unbeaten stand of 71 to take Middlesex home in the 45th over. Dalrymple was 49 not out and Styris 32 not out. Ronnie Irani top scored for Essex with 83.
North Conference The game of the day was Durham's tussle with Yorkshire. A battle right to the finishing line, Durham squeaked over on the last ball to win by two wickets. Jimmy Maher fittingly hit the winning runs; his team were indebted to him after he struck an unbeaten century. Craig White also brought up an undefeated ton, but he was to end on the losing side after Maher's onslaught - his 124 came in 138 balls, with 14 fours. His fellow Australian Jason Gillespie had done his best to put the skids under Durham, knocking over the top order to take 3 for 41, but it wasn't enough. There's no stopping Stuart Law. His 78 lifted Lancashire to what was in the end a comfortable five-wicket victory. They had been wobbling at one stage at 28 for 3 but the strong arm of Law, helped by Luke Sutton (53 not out) took Lancashire home with ten overs still on the clock; the pair put on 128 for the fourth wicket. Gavin Hamilton top scored for Scotland with 48, but Tom Smith denied him his half-century and Scotland crumbled for just 167. Glen Chapple is still proving a force in the one-day game - he grabbed 4 for 23 from his ten overs. An opening stand of 158 between Tim New and Darren Robinson for Leicestershire helped to overhaul Northamptonshire's 203 for 8 at Oakham. Jason Brown removed both of them eventually but not before they had done enough damage - both made half-centuries. Northants have yet to record a win in this competition. © Cricinfo
