Sarfraz on the job to prepare fast bowlers

Col (Retd) Rafi Nasim

July 26, 2000

Sarfraz Nawaz, the Pakistan's legendary fast bowler, who has many times before, performed the invaluable task of preparing fast bowlers has again been appointed the national coach for fast bowlers. He will be taking over his assignment immediately and start coaching the upcoming youngsters in the art of pace bowling during the national coaching camp in progress at the National Stadium Karachi.

When asked to highlight his plans, Sarfraz Nawaz explained: -

1. He will first concentrate on the preparation of pitches with different characteristics so that the pace bowlers are trained to emerge successful in different situations. The pitches will be grassy like England and New Zealand, hard & fast with low and high bounce, and sporting like South Africa, Australia and the West Indies. They will also be mud rolled types for one-day matches.

2. Apart from the use of these pitches the boys will be taught the different techniques of controlling the flight, pace and direction of the ball.

3. Video films will be prepared of the bowling action of the camp trainees to help in rectifying their defects during the process of training.

4. Col. Shuja ud Din Butt the former test cricketer who has been appointed by the PCB as own analyst for Pakistan team's performance will be asked to procure the videos of England's players so that the bowlers can be apprised of their weaknesses. This will help the Pakistani bowlers to make short work of them during England's tour of Pakistan in October next.

Sarfraz further mentioned that though it would not be easy to replace a bowler of Wasim Akram's class still Pakistan possesses lot of talent in the field of pace bowling. Mohammad Akram, Shabbir Ahmed and Mohammad Zahid who is returning to the game after a lay off on account of back trouble will be paid special attention. Out of the galaxy of budding youngster he termed Kashif Raza and Saad Khan Janjua as the real future prospects.

In the end Sarfraz Nawaz complimented Lt. Gen Tauqir Zia, chairman PCB for holding the camp at Karachi to offset the heat and humidity of Lahore.
