 Profile

Spin bowlers of genuine potential are a rarity in South Africa, much less the jewels who can hold a bat as well as field with attacking intent. Peterson, a left-arm finger spinner from Eastern Province, fills all three vacancies more than competently. He has taken over 100 first-class wickets and scored four centuries, and he maintains a lurking presence square of the wicket when he is in the field. At first glance he seems an overly orthodox slow bowler, but he turns the ball appreciably given help from the pitch and is invariably a tidy operatorwith a steadily developing understanding of flight. Peterson has also cultivated an unusual delivery that turns into the right-handed batsmen. Peterson was part of the South African Under-19 team that took on Pakistan and England, and he played in the 1998 under-19 World Cup. He made his Test debut in 2003 against Bangladesh, taking five wickets and scored 61, but has since played mainly for the one-day side.

Peterson was recalled for South Africa's one-day tour of India in late 2005, and played in the fourth and fifth matches with little success. In February 2006, he played three one-day matches against Australia at home but managed a solitary wicket even as Australia were downed in the series. With first-choice Nicky Boje not included in South Africa's Champions Trophy squad, Peterson was given another opportunity to shine as the lone specialist spinner. He played just one ODI each against India and South Africa when they toured in succession recently, but was included in the 15-man squad for the 2007 World Cup. He helped South Africa sneak home by one wicket in a thriller against Sri Lanka at Providence but has failed to maintain a regular place in the side. He took his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests, against Bangladesh in Chittagong the following year.
