NPCA again fails to end stalemate

The ongoing saga of the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association's failure to approve a new constitution rumbles on, and almost nine months after it was supposed to approve it and hold fresh elections, an entirely unacceptable situation is still barely any nearer a resolution.

The NPCA has repeatedly failed to hold meetings and stands accused of delaying the process. It's already depleted executive - the elected chairman has been overseas for more than a year - has been further weakened by the resignations of two of its most senior and credible officials - Nilesh Lakhani and David Waters.

Although Cricket Kenya has shown tremendous patience and has so far stayed on the sidelines, preferring to let the NPCA get its own house in order, questions are being asked from abroad as the delays have in turn led to CK having to hold fire on its own elections which should have taken place last July.

The latest NPCA meeting took place this weekend but again ended without a definite decision. Cricket Kenya has been asked for yet another postponement, this time of two months, to allow the revised constitution to be fine tuned.

However, there were interesting developments at the meeting as the old Kenyan Cricket Association officers reappeared. Sharad Ghai, the KCA chairman who was ousted in May 2005, had already resurfaced as a delegate of Nairobi Gymkhana, but more surprising was the return of Jackie Janmohamed who was representing Simba Union. Nairobi Institute put forward Sunil Sarkar and Raja Sarkar, the brother and son of the former secretary, Anil Sarkar.

Many of those who so vociferously opposed the old KCA have expressed astonishment at the news, while it is believed that government officials, who also played a major role in bringing about the end of the KCA, are monitoring the situation closely.
