2nd Test: New Zealand v England at Wellington, 21-25 Mar 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Welcome to the Basin Reserve for the second Test of the National
Bank Series between the CLEAR Black Caps and England.
The weather here in Wellington is not conducive to playing cricket
        at all today.
Showers have been coming and going all morning and a stiff wind
from the north west is gusting across the ground.
The famous Basin bank is empty at the moment adn the covers are
        still well and truely on.
The scheduled start time is rapidly approaching and the ground
staff are still working hard to remove water from the surface of
teh covers and the area around the covers.
This would have to be the worst weather seen at the Basin on a
match day this season, if not for a very long time.
Weather early on in the first class season could not have been said
to be first class, however it did improve through out Febuary.
Today however that trend seems to have been turned on its head and
the picture is not positive as drizzle hangs over the backdrop of
        Mount Victoria.
Even if it wasn't raining, the light here is also probably not up
        to standard.
Many of the cars on surrounding roads have their headlights on.
As time progresses, the rain just falls harder and harder and play
        looks less and less likely.
Word has just come through from the umpires that on the advice of
the groundsman, the ground will take four hours to prepare one the
        rain has stopped.
At this stage at looks as if a decision will be made between 1300
        and 1400 local time.
The weather has brightened up slightly, however the drizzle still
        remains.
In the middle of the ground, a photographer seems to be taking
advantage of what may become the leading story of the day, photos
of the ground staff hard at work, removing water from the covers.
Just as the rain looked like easing off, it has decided to come
down even harder, Mount Victoria, or Mount Vic as it is known to
the locals is covered in sheets of rain.
As time goes on and more rain fall, play looks less and less likely
to commence on day one here at the Basin.
Rain is now coming down in sheets and the wind has kept up, chances
of play are becoming slimmer and slimmer.
The call has just come through and play has been abandoned for the
day without a ball being bowled at 1230 local time.
The weather had the upper hand all morning and after deliberation
between the umpires and the groundsman, play has been called off.
That is it for the day from the Basin Reserve, although it never
really started, and it seems that the weather is just getting
worse and worse along with the light.
welcome to the Basin Reserve in Wellington for the second day of
the second National Bank Test between New Zealand and England
the news is better than yesterday, but not yet quite good enough,
with it being very sunny here and a strong drying breeze blowing,
but there's been plenty of seepage beneath the covers, leaving
many troubling damp and muddy spots
the groundstaff have driers near some of them, and are running the
roller over hessian strips on top of the particularly moist areas
to bring up excess water to the surface
but considering all that needs to be done, we're certainly not
going to get a start before lunch, and it'll probably be closer to
tea before we get a chance to see the first action in this match
the forecast is much better today, so there must be some hope for
play with no rain forecast at this stage, but just how much is in
the hands of the groundsmen and umpires
the New Zealand team have made an appearance to inspect the
conditions, but the England side haven't yet bothered to leave
        their team hotel
we'll bring you more updates as they come to hand, but for the time
being we're set for a few hours delay

Match State: Delay - Day 2 - Damp ground conditions delay start of play

The umpires will inspect the ground at 1400 local time as reports
suggest that ground state is improving.
The weather has steadily imporved and now bright sunshine bathes
        the Basin.
All that is required is a nice dry ground to play on.
The announcment has just been made at the ground, play is to
        commence at 1530 local time.
There will be a three hour session of 45 overs.
The players have taken the field for their warm ups, much to the
        appreciation of the crowd.
New Zealand have won the toss and elected to bowl on a very green
        looking wicket.
The ground is now clear of all paraphanalia apart from a lone mower
on the outfield and a few sea gulls.
No doubt this patient crowd will show their delight when play gets
under way in about fifteen minutes or so.
A very decent crowd has made its way into the ground and it finally
looks as if they are going to get some action out in the middle
        today.
There is a decent spread of humanity on the bank and a solid
looking crowd in the RA Vance stand, the Museum Stand and the
        terraces.
The Basin scoreboard is also back to full functionality for the
        second National Bank Test.
There is a big applause as the players finally emerge to the field.
Everything is set and the first ball is about to finally be bowled.

discussions aobut the light and lit looks like that might be it for
        the day.
yes it isthe players are leaving the field, however the umpires
        havn't yet drawn the stumps
the light is steadily failing adn the covers are comign out
no clouds about the sun has just gone down
The covers are now well and truly on adn it looks like stumps have
        been drawn for the day.
In the end only 30 overs could be bowled due to the failing light
that doesn't tedn to hang around at this time of year much any
        way.
The lack fo cloud cover this evening suggests that this could very
well be a best case scenario in terms of playable hours.
England have managed to build a reasonable start to the innings, in
the context of the series and the test.
If England can secure a draw here, then they are unable to lose the
series, so the pressure is on New Zeaalnd to force some kind of
result in their favour to take the series.

Match State: Stumps - Day 3

Stumps are now drawn here at the Basin Reserve and the match as the
        shadows strech across the ground.
Neither side has yet taken this test by the scruff of the neck, and
unless New Zealand do then the series will be impossible for
        England to loose.
That is it from the Basin, join us at 1000 local time tomorow for
        the fourth day.
Welcome to the Basin Reserve for this the fourth scheduled day of
the second National Bank Series Test.
In terms of the weather, we have mainly blue skies, with some cloud
about, however local knowledge would indicate that these are not
threatening at all and if anything the weather should only get
        better.
Play is scheduled to start in half an hour but not before a moments
silence is observed in tribute to Ben Hollioake.
All players and match officials line up to observe the moments
silence and the ground is silent, apart from the traffic outside.
Everything is now in ready for the first ball to be bowled.
