South Africa v India, 3rd Test, Cape Town, 1st day

Jaffer and Karthik set the standard

George Binoy

January 2, 2007

The openers finally gave India the kind of start they had been hoping for all series. But it was Dinesh Karthik - and not Virender Sehwag - who partnered Wasim Jaffer during a substantial first-wicket stand. Cricinfo looks at the stat highlights of the first day at Cape Town.

153 - The opening-stand between Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik was the highest for India in South Africa. It was also their first century stand for the first wicket in South Africa. The previous highest was 90 between Nayan Mongia and Vikram Rathore at Johannesburg in 1997.

22- the number of Tests since a team put on hundred runs for the first wicket against South Africa. The last instance was when Andrew Strauss and Marcus Trescothick added 273 at Durban in 2004.

100 - the number of catches Jacques Kallis has taken in Tests when he caught Wasim Jaffer. He is the first South African to reach this landmark. Kallis has joined Garry Sobers in a very exclusive club - that of 8000 runs, 200 wickets and 100 catches.

20 - the number of balls Rahul Dravid took to race to 23, after which he stagnated and managed only 6 off his next 38 balls. He scored only one off 21 balls that Shaun Pollock bowled to him.

11.11 - Karthik's strike-rate against Pollock. Only Jaffer managed to score at a healthy rate against him - 25 off 48 balls. Jaffer also managed to score at 77.14 against Makhaya Ntini (27 off 35 balls).

78 - Dravid's runs in this series after five innings. He averages 15.60 and has a highest of 32.

95.49% - Jaffer's in-control factor during his innings. Out of 244 balls, Jaffer was in control of 233. Incidentally he scored 16 off the 11 balls he wasn't in control of.

  • On a lighter note: When Sachin Tendulkar was on 10, Jaffer was on 110: Tendulkar had 10600 Test runs and Jaffer had 1060.
