Ian Chappell

Ian Chappell on Gilchrist's retirement

A hard act to follow

January 26, 2008

Ian Chappell feels that Adam Gilchrist took a wise decision as there were signs of his 'keeping deteriorating and that a player of his worth does not deserve to be dropped. At the same time, it's good news for Brad Haddin, but it will be a hard act to follow Gilchrist

Adam Gilchrist, I liked you most among all cricketers. And you are quiting the game!! I still can't believe it....still I think I am dreaming and after I awake, I must see you are playing for Australia. I do not know, whether you will read this post or not, I will remember you as long as I can breathe....that's all for now...because I can't hold out my tears........I am crying.....please do not leave cricket!!!!...please...

If Cricket is called a gentleman's game, then he belongs to that breed of gentlemen; which unfortunately is fading away fast. He'll always remembered as one of the greatest contributor to the game, and surely one of the best wicketkeeper batsman game has ever seen. Being in the team which is often haunted for their misbehavior on the field, here was 1 guy who moved on his own even when umpire gave him not out. Gilly.. You're the one of the best entertainer of the game, and we thank you for what you have done to game. Kapil Vijan

There are many well deserved superlatives concerning Adam Gilchrist- For his abiltity to turn the game in an hour, for his sometimes unrecognised brilliant glovework to Warne on turning wickets and his spectacular full length catches off the quicks with his long reach, for his simple unrivalled entertainment value, for his longetivity without missing a game, for his sportsmanship in walking no matter how important the situation. But the thing that best sums him up was his very short failure in Sydney in the second innings against India. He came in knowing Ponting was about to declare in a few overs and Australia just needing a few quick runs. Many test batsman would have been conscious of their average knowing Punter was about to declare and pushing the ball around a well spread field. Not Gilly.ALWAYS the consumate teamman he holed out in the deep second ball doing what he always did-putting his team first.Teamates, opponents and spectators worldwide salute a true team man and champion.

Well adam was an out-standing cricketer,a role model for the modern cricketers after brian lara i think he was the only batsman i have seen who walked when he was out even if he was in a crunch situation,e.g the dismissal against the Sri Lankans in the 2003 world cup sami final when umpire did not give him out but he knew he has nicked it so he walked. As a whicket he might have some short comings but as a batsman on his day he was brutal and elegent at the same time he is probably the all time great whicket keeper bats man of all times. There is always a replacement for every player and position in the team but some players are irreplaceable he is one of those. Now how Australia coup wiht this loss,it really matters bucause after warn, langer, demian martin and glen this is the fith player of that powerfull team which is gone so thinking time for the cricket australia...

Thank You Adam Gilchrist for all the entertainment you provide to all the cricket lovers. Good Luck for your next career of life. I still remember his innings of Hobart when he won the match for Australia against Pakistan, and I was upset because Pakistan lost that match from the match winning position. Also he was a quite guy,who also had keep himself away from sledging and other controversies. He was a great asset for international cricket and will always be remembered as one of the very best.

Adam Gilchrist has been my favourite cricket since his century against Pak in 1999. I really admire his gamemanship, his leadership qualities and ready to take the bull by the horns when the chips are down.. You have been a phenominal cricketer and will be sadly missed. But knowing you, the decision made would be in the best interest keeping in mind all. You are a fantastic ambassador for your country and the sport. Thanks for changing the face of test cricket and revolutionizing one day cricket. You are indeed the best cricketer in the world. Thanks for being my favourite cricketer. "Adam gilchrist", a sensation who changed the role wicket keepers used to play and it is really sad for world cricket to lose a proven performer like him. i accept ur views that he was a better batsman. but if u look at present wicket keepers, he stands at the top for his wicket keeping too. perhaps its his batting which is so good that people mistaken him to be not so good kind of keeper. anyone following cricket must have memories of gilly flying to take catches. he has been a wonderful human being as well and is certainly one who will be admired and actually is idolized by most of the present day wicket keepers and those who r upcoming. well, every good thing has to end. and brad haddin needs to be happy for getting a permanent place. but i think even he cant relax as there are likes of luke ronchi waiting for their opportunity. so, even he needs to be on his toe as people will expect no less than they did from gilly. finally hats off to the great performer.u will always be there.

Certainly a hard act to follow. But just like over time in the past, there have been successors to Rod Marsh,Alan Knott and Derrick Murray there will be a successor to Adam Gilchrist some day. In the meantime, cricket and the fans will miss a high caliber cricketer and will remain revered in the annals of cricket. Have a great rest of life with Mel and yuor children, Adam. Thanks for your spectacular contribution to cricket. You will be missed.

Always touching when you say good-bye to a person who has thrilled you for so long, and has almost always lived up to the promise of playing the game as it should be played - without fear, and fair. He'll be missed not only by Australians but by cricket followers everywhere. Almost unassumingly he has done almost as much, if not more, for Australian cricket as possibly a Mcgrath or even a Warne. I have been privileged to have followed and loved the era that is slowly ending, Gilchrist being the latest exit, with atleast 5 more greats soon to follow him (our own Sachin included). Prabhat.
