Alun Evans was born in the Amman Valley to the west of Swansea
in August 1975, and was brought up in Fishguard in Pembrokeshire, where his free scoring
strokeplay attracted the attention of Glamorgan's talent scouts, who had little doubt in
sending the compact young batsman to further his cricketing education on the
Lord's groundstaff.
Whilst at H.Q., Evans played for both M.C.C. Young Cricketers and
Middlesex Seconds, but he returned to South Wales for 1996 and celebrated his promotion onto
the county's fulltime staff with 3 centuries in the first month of Second Eleven cricket.
It was a performance which also earned Evans a first-class debut against Oxford
University in June . He marked his debut with a cultured 66* and he played in a
further six games during 1996.
Evans only played in one Championship match in 1997, but he remained a heavy scorer in second
team cricket. Hugh Morris' retirement at the end of 1997 allowed Evans to start the 1998 season
as the regular opening batsman, before sustaining a stress fracture in his shin. He returned to
full fitness at the end of the 1998 season, and after a good pre-season tour to South Africa,
Evans struck his maiden one day century in 1999.
The signing of Australian openers Matthew Elliott and Jimmy Maher for 2000 and 2001
restricted Evans` subsequent opportunities in the 1st XI, and he was released at the end of 2002.
