The Sunday League's inaugural season was described as "instant cricket and an instant success", altough the editor Norman Preston stressed that it should never become a substitute for genuine first-class cricket. He also urged against the introduction of four-day Championship games: "I can imagine nothing more dreary." At publication, there was still a chance that the South African tour of England would go ahead, but the spectre of mob violence loomed large. Among the Cricketers of the Year were Majid Jahangir Khan and Don Shepherd, in recognition of Glamorgan's championship win.
