1994

The 1994 Almanack was the first to be published since the title was bought by J Paul Getty, thus ensuring its future and, more importantly, independence. After his changes in his first year as editor, Matthew Engel kept alterations to a minimum and his Notes were guardedly optimistic, as cricket welcomed Zimbabwe and also showed signs of expansion around the world. He welcomed so-called neutral umpires, but deplored the introduction of TV replays for line decisions as a "disaster". But this was the year of Shane Warne's remarkable Ashes debut (that ball to a bewildered Mike Gatting) and England winning the World Cup at Lord's - the women, who had staged their own tournament two years before the men, giving English cricket something to smile about in a year when the men were routed by Australia.
