A right-handed batsman, Adam Bacher developed into a superb
attacking opener, especially in limited-over matches. Bacher toured Sri Lanka with the South African Under-24 side in 1995-96 and made his Test debut the following summer. After a shaky start, he found form at the end of that campaign with 96 against Australia at Centurion, and in 1997-98 he scored two fifties - including another 96 at Sheikhupura - in Pakistan. He continued to impress in Australia later that summer, but a poor tour of England followed and he failed in subsequent outings against West Indies and Zimbabwe. After almost seven years in the wilderness he was surprisingly picked for an ODI against England in 2004-05, laregly on the weight of his domestic run scoring. But he scratched around, got out to an appalling stroke, and was dropped. He is the nephew of South African cricket supremo Dr Ali Bacher.
