Caribbean Memories: Salim Durani on 1971

Salim Durani: got Sobers, got Lloyd, made history ©

1971 is one of the greatest years in India's cricketing history: In that year India, led by Ajit Wadekar, toured West Indies and won the Test series 1-0. The crucial win came in the second Test, at Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, where India's spinners took 17 of the 20 wickets to fall. Of those, the most crucial were arguably taken by Salim Durani, when he got Garry Sobers and Clive Lloyd out in the second innings.

In this installment of Caribbean Memories, Durani tells Nagraj Gollapudi about that game, and gives us details of how he set up Sobers and Lloyd for those wickets. They weren't flukes: there was a detailed plan behind it, and Durani implemented the plan perfectly. There's nothing quite as fascinating as getting inside a spinner's head and seeing how he sets players up, so if you haven't done it already, download the MP3 now.

One of the highlights from Durani's charming and candid interview comes towards the end when he talks about how sporting West Indies were. He says:

They're one of the finest cricket-playing countries in the world ... but not on the ground. On the ground they'll break your head. But after the game they used to take us to [their] home[s], and this and that.

There'll be much more coming up from Cricinfo Audio in the next few weeks. Keep listening.
